Why in news
The National Medical Commission has approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats, taking India's total undergraduate medical capacity to a record 1,36,939 for the 2026-27 academic session. This expansion is driven by regulatory changes under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, which allow colleges to apply for seat increases earlier. The move aims to address the persistent gap between demand and supply, as over 22 lakh candidates appear for NEET-UG annually.
Background
India has been facing a shortage of doctors, with a doctor-population ratio of 1:811 against the WHO benchmark of 1:1000. The government has been expanding medical education infrastructure to improve healthcare access. The National Medical Commission (NMC) replaced the Medical Council of India in 2020 to regulate medical education.
Key facts
NMC approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats for 2026-27, raising total capacity to 1,36,939.
The seat matrix includes 1,27,028 renewed seats and covers 823 medical colleges (441 govt, 382 private).
2,400 seats are from 25 new medical colleges (7 govt, 18 private); 7,511 from increased intake in existing colleges.
Private institutions contributed nearly 79% of the additional seats.
The expansion is enabled by Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023, which removed the restriction that colleges could apply for seat increase only after 4.5-5 years.
Over 22 lakh candidates appear for NEET-UG each year, indicating high demand.
India's doctor-population ratio is 1:811, better than the WHO benchmark of 1:1000.
NMC warned colleges against admitting students beyond sanctioned intake, citing penal action under NMC Act, 2019.
The seat matrix excludes Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS and JIPMER.
Colleges must verify approved seats before counselling and report discrepancies to MARB.
