The Department of Pharmaceuticals notified the Drugs (Price Control) Amendment Order, 2026 on June 30, 2026, requiring manufacturers of new formulations to adhere to the retail price already notified by NPPA within the last 12 months. This was disclosed in a Lok Sabha reply by Minister Anupriya Patel, highlighting NPPA's enforcement actions including 103 demand notices in the last four months.
Background
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is the regulatory body responsible for implementing Drug Price Control Orders (DPCO) issued by the Department of Pharmaceuticals. The DPCO 2013 is the current framework for price control of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs in India.

The Drugs (Price Control) Amendment Order, 2026 was notified via S.O. 3516(E) on June 30, 2026.
Existing manufacturers producing a new drug formulation whose retail price has been notified by NPPA in the last 12 months must follow that same retail price.
Manufacturers must inform NPPA under Form-1A within one month of the launch date.
Registration of production lines or batches by domestic manufacturers is not mandatory under Form-1A.
NPPA monitors prices of scheduled and non-scheduled drugs under DPCO 2013.
NPPA takes action against manufacturers overcharging consumers based on inputs from Price Monitoring and Resource Units (PMRUs), State Drug Controllers, open market samples, market database reports, and complaints.
In the last four months, NPPA issued 103 demand notices to manufacturers across the country, including Tamil Nadu.
NPPA does not maintain state-wise records of overcharging by drug companies.
The information was given by Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Smt. Anupriya Patel, in a written reply in Lok Sabha.
