The Ministry of Labour and Employment announced that over 54 lakh beneficiaries have registered under the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) scheme across India as of July 29, 2026. Background
PM-SYM was launched in February 2019 to provide old-age protection to unorganized sector workers. It is a voluntary and contributory pension scheme under which subscribers receive a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after attaining 60 years of age.
Key facts
PM-SYM provides a monthly pension of ₹3,000 to unorganized sector workers after they reach 60 years of age.
Eligibility: Workers aged 18-40 years with monthly income up to ₹15,000, and not members of EPFO, ESIC, or NPS (contributed by central government), and not income taxpayers.
Monthly contribution ranges from ₹55 to ₹200 based on the entry age of the beneficiary.
The beneficiary contributes 50% of the monthly contribution, and the central government contributes an equal matching amount.
As of July 29, 2026, over 54 lakh beneficiaries have registered under PM-SYM.
Women's participation in the scheme is 53.1%.
The central government's matching contribution under PM-SYM is ₹2,011.01 crore.
Pension distribution will begin only after February 2039, as the scheme started in February 2019.
Accounts can become inactive due to non-payment of monthly contributions, often due to insufficient bank balance, change/closure of linked bank account, or lack of awareness.
Government measures to improve retention include periodic review meetings with states/UTs, incentives to CSCs, new features like voluntary exit and revival module, increasing revival period from 1 to 3 years, two-way integration with e-Shram portal, SMS campaigns, addressing Chief Secretaries, and nationwide special registration drives.
