Why in news
The Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission Gramin (VB-GRAM G) scheme officially replaced MGNREGA nationwide from July 1, 2026. Punjab government resolved long-pending demands of MGNREGA/VB-GRAM G employees, enabling implementation from July 30, 2026.
Background
MGNREGA was a flagship rural employment guarantee scheme. VB-GRAM G is its successor, launched to improve rural livelihoods and employment guarantees.
Key facts
VB-GRAM G replaced MGNREGA nationwide from July 1, 2026.
Punjab government resolved demands of MGNREGA/VB-GRAM G Employees’ Union on July 29, 2026.
Finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema chaired the meeting with union representatives.
Decisions cover service conditions, contractual tenure, migration to VB-GRAM G, remuneration, and administrative matters.
Nearly 2,000 employees across Punjab will benefit from the decisions.
Principal secretary Ajit Balaji Joshi and joint development commissioner Shena Aggarwal were present.
Cheema also met education and power department unions, directing accelerated review of service matters.
