The Ministry of Culture organized a National Digitization Workshop under the 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' in New Delhi, with over 200 delegates from states, UTs, centers, and technology partners. Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat highlighted that over 1.2 crore manuscripts have been documented, marking a significant national achievement. The workshop aimed to strengthen the manuscript preservation framework and called for continued national efforts in digitization.
Background
India has a rich manuscript heritage spanning philosophy, Ayurveda, literature, mathematics, yoga, and diverse knowledge systems, reflecting the civilizational ethos of 'Gyanam Paramam Dhyeyam' (knowledge is the supreme goal). The Ministry of Culture has been working to preserve and digitize these manuscripts under the Gyan Bharatam Mission.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Culture under the 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' at 'The Ashok', New Delhi.
Over 200 delegates from states/UTs, centers, custodians, scholars, experts, and technology partners participated.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat praised the collaborative effort and noted that over 1.2 crore manuscripts have been documented.
The workshop focused on five main themes: reviewing national digitization goals, standardizing imaging and metadata practices, improving implementation strategies, showcasing best-performing states, and addressing operational challenges.
Presentations were made by Rajasthan, BORI Pune, Jammu & Kashmir, Asiatic Society Kolkata, and Gyan Bharatam centers like KOBA (Gujarat), Vrindavan Research Institute, Sevadhi (Kerala), and Jamia Hamdard (Delhi).
The Ministry showcased an emerging national digital manuscript ecosystem that is AI-platform friendly and has a systematic access policy framework.
The Ministry emphasized that preservation and digitization will go hand in hand, with funding provided to states and centers for infrastructure, equipment, and trained manpower.
Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal stressed the need for timely, systematic, and coordinated work with all stakeholders to ensure uniformity and quality.
The mission's two-phase functional pattern (technical and scholarly understanding) was explained by Project Director Prof. Anirban Dash.
