The Indian Air Force (IAF) is participating in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, a major biennial multinational air combat exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) at RAAF Base Darwin. This marks India's continued engagement in the exercise, having previously participated in 2018, 2022, and 2024. The exercise enhances interoperability and strengthens defence cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
Background
Exercise Pitch Black is a biennial multinational air combat exercise conducted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) since 1981. It is named after the night flying special operations over the vast uninhabited areas of northern Australia. India first participated in 2018.

Exercise Pitch Black 2026 is being held from 20 July to 7 August 2026 at RAAF Base Darwin, Australia.
It is a biennial multinational air combat exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
The IAF contingent includes pilots, engineers, technicians, controllers, and other specialists operating Rafale multirole fighter aircraft.
Support aircraft include C-17 Globemaster-III and IL-78 air-to-air refuelling aircraft.
The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, strengthen force integration, and exchange operational best practices.
It provides an opportunity to test expeditionary air operations over long distances and strengthen professional partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.
India previously participated in Pitch Black in 2018, 2022, and 2024.
