Why in news
The Ministry of Rural Development released updated data on the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), showing that over 7.96 lakh km of rural roads and 10,833 bridges have been constructed across various components. This update highlights the progress of PMGSY-IV, PM-JANMAN, and the Vibrant Village Programme, which are key government initiatives for rural connectivity and border area development.
Background
PMGSY was launched in 2000 to provide all-weather road connectivity to unconnected rural habitations. Over the years, it has been expanded with components like PMGSY-II for upgrading existing roads, PMGSY-III for consolidation of through routes, and PM-JANMAN for tribal areas. The scheme is a central sector initiative under the Ministry of Rural Development.

Total approved: 1,98,011 roads (8,55,980.33 km) and 12,576 bridges under all PMGSY components.
Constructed: 1,85,651 roads (7,96,940.94 km) and 10,833 bridges.
Component-wise construction: PMGSY-I: 1,63,851 roads (6,25,488.10 km), 7,257 bridges; PMGSY-II: 6,634 roads (49,130.23 km), 750 bridges; RCPLWEA: 1,086 roads (9,961.60 km), 586 bridges; PMGSY-III: 13,408 roads (1,08,970.37 km), 2,240 bridges; PM-JANMAN: 672 roads (3,041.95 km), 0 bridges; PMGSY-IV: 0 roads (348.69 km), 0 bridges.
PM-JANMAN aims to provide all-weather road connectivity to PVTG habitations, with a target of 8,000 km including bridges, by March 2028.
Under PM-JANMAN, Rs. 1,218 crore released against allocation of Rs. 4,708 crore; expenditure Rs. 1,542 crore as of 26.07.2026.
Vibrant Village Programme-1 (VVP-1) approved 113 roads (1,085 km) and 35 bridges for 137 settlements; 10 roads (248 km) constructed, Rs. 996.72 crore released as of 26.7.2026.
VVP-II is being implemented in convergence with PMGSY-IV.
New Technology Initiative Guidelines 2022 require states to propose at least 50% of annual proposals under new/green technologies like cement stabilization, waste plastic, cold mix, etc.
PMGSY-II upgraded 50,000 km existing rural roads; PMGSY-III consolidated 1,25,000 km through routes connecting 6,96,620 facility centers (including 1,38,637 agricultural markets, 1,46,784 educational centers, 82,806 medical centers, 3,28,393 transport centers).
Contractors must maintain roads and bridges for a five-year defect liability period (DLP) after construction.
