Why in news
The government has announced the achievement of the target under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). This marks a significant milestone in providing housing to rural households.
Background
PMAY-G was launched in 2016 to provide pucca houses with basic amenities to all rural households without a house or living in kutcha houses. The scheme aims to achieve 'Housing for All' by 2024.
Key facts
PMAY-G target of constructing 2.95 crore houses has been achieved.
The scheme provides financial assistance of Rs. 1.20 lakh in plain areas and Rs. 1.30 lakh in hilly/difficult areas.
Beneficiaries are identified through the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) 2011.
The scheme also provides assistance for toilet construction under Swachh Bharat Mission.
The target was achieved ahead of the original deadline of 2024.
