Why in news
The government has strengthened de-addiction and awareness initiatives in Jammu & Kashmir under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA). Recent data shows over 1.20 crore people in J&K have been reached, with 8,565 Nasha Mukti Mitras associated, highlighting the campaign's expanding impact.
Background
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched on 15 August 2020 to prevent drug abuse through awareness, rehabilitation, and counseling. It is implemented by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). The campaign has now been extended to all districts of India.
Key facts
In J&K, over 1.20 crore people have been reached under NMBA as of 29 July 2026, including 69.14 lakh youth and 51.20 lakh women.
8,565 Nasha Mukti Mitras are associated with the campaign in J&K.
Nationally, NMBA has reached over 29.05 crore people, including 11.05 crore youth and 7.81 crore women, with over 1.17 lakh Nasha Mukti Mitras.
The Ministry provides financial support to state governments, UTs, NGOs, and government hospitals for prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs.
In J&K, support is provided to 1 Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), 3 Outreach and Drop-In Centres (ODIC), 2 Community-based Peer-led Intervention (CPLI) programmes, 6 District De-addiction Centres (DDAC), and 21 Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATF) in government hospitals.
The national toll-free de-addiction helpline 14446 has received over 4.6 lakh calls nationwide, including over 11,000 from J&K.
NMBA implementation is reviewed through monthly meetings, reflection camps, and national conferences; states are encouraged to set up NMBA committees at state, district, and block levels.
The campaign focuses on educational institutions, universities, and schools to generate awareness through community participation.
