Why in news
The Centre has granted in-principle approval to extend the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) from Modipuram in Meerut to Haridwar and Rishikesh. This will enhance connectivity between Delhi and Uttarakhand, boosting tourism and economic development.
Background
The Delhi-Meerut RRTS is a semi-high-speed rail corridor under the Namo Bharat project, currently under construction. The extension to Haridwar and Rishikesh is a new phase to connect key religious and tourist destinations.
