Why in news
As of 30 June 2026, 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been opened across India, saving citizens an estimated ₹45,000 crore over 12 years. The PIB release details the expansion, product range, and awareness campaigns under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
Background
PMBJP was launched to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices through dedicated outlets called Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The scheme is implemented by the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI).
Key facts
Total JAKs operational: 20,149 as of 30 June 2026.
Estimated savings to citizens: ~₹45,000 crore over 12 years compared to branded drugs.
Product list includes 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical items, consumables, and equipment.
Covers major therapeutic groups: cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infective, anti-allergic, digestive, and nutrients.
Nearly all generic drugs from the National List of Essential Medicines (excluding lab reagents and vaccines) are included.
JAKs are present in 776 out of 784 districts.
Awareness campaigns use print, TV, radio, social media, outdoor hoardings, community engagement, WhatsApp chatbot, and outbound calls.
Jan Aushadhi Saptah is observed annually in the first week of March.
Applications for opening JAKs are invited online from individuals, NGOs, societies, trusts, firms, private companies, etc.
PMBI coordinates with district administrations to provide free space in government hospitals for JAKs in underserved areas.
