External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated that India-China relations have been gradually normalising since the Modi-Xi meeting in Kazan in October 2024. He made these remarks during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Manila.
Background
India-China relations have been strained since the 2020 Galwan clash and subsequent military standoff in eastern Ladakh. Diplomatic and military talks have been ongoing to de-escalate tensions and restore peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Jaishankar said India-China ties have been gradually normalising since PM Modi and President Xi met in Kazan, Russia in October 2024.
The normalisation direction was further affirmed when the leaders met in Tianjin in August 2025.
Jaishankar stressed that peace and tranquility along the border remain the 'pre-requisite' for normal bilateral relations.
He raised India's concerns over market access, trade imbalance, and predictability of supply chains.
Jaishankar stated that differences should not become disputes and diplomacy must manage them properly.
He emphasised that a stable relationship must be based on mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity.
Both sides have engaged since October 2024 to ensure peace in border areas, requiring constant attention and support for relevant mechanisms.
