Why in news
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment announced that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) has reached over 29.32 crore citizens, including 11.20 crore youth and 7.92 crore women. The campaign has also organized over 21 lakh awareness activities in educational institutions and received over 4.60 lakh calls on the de-addiction helpline 14446.
Background
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched on 15 August 2020 under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR). It initially covered 272 vulnerable districts and has now expanded nationwide. The campaign aims to prevent substance abuse through awareness, community participation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration.

Treatment and rehabilitation services under NAPDDR have benefited over 28.29 lakh people through 768 Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCA), Community-Based Peer-Led Intervention Centres (CPLI), Outreach and Drop-In Centres (ODIC), and Addiction Treatment Facilities (ATF).
The number of people seeking treatment increased by 294% from 2.08 lakh in 2020 to over 8.20 lakh in 2025.
The campaign encourages citizens to take the NMBA pledge and become 'Nasha Mukti Mitra'.
It involves collaboration with Narcotics Control Bureau, state governments, district administrations, police, NGOs, hospitals, and educational institutions.
