Why in news
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment will observe the 6th anniversary of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA) on 18 August 2026 with a nationwide pledge against drug abuse. A high-level coordination meeting was held on 23 July 2026 to plan the event, aiming to unite over 10-12 crore citizens physically and online. The campaign has already reached over 29.68 crore citizens through awareness activities.
Background
NMBA was launched on 15 August 2020 by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to address drug demand in India. It implements the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) based on a national survey by AIIMS. The ministry coordinates prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and community awareness.
