The Lucknow Municipal Corporation's ₹350-crore Urban Flood Risk Mitigation Programme has received administrative approval from the state government and the national appraisal committee, and has been forwarded to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for final clearance. This brings the project closer to implementation, aiming to address the city's chronic waterlogging issues.
Background
Lucknow has faced recurring urban flooding and waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas. The project has undergone an 18-month appraisal process with multiple technical reviews before reaching this stage.
Key facts
The ₹350-crore Urban Flood Risk Mitigation Programme for Lucknow has been cleared by the state government and national appraisal committee.
The proposal is now with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for final approval and fund release.
Funding: ₹200 crore from National Disaster Management Fund (NDMF) via NDMA, and ₹150 crore from Uttar Pradesh government.
₹244.8 crore allocated for drainage infrastructure, pond/lake rejuvenation, blue-green infrastructure, riparian buffers, and replacing ageing pumping stations.
₹105.2 crore for floodplain zoning, pump automation, blue-green master plan, early warning and decision support system, and a state-level flood control room.
Critical flood-prone stretches identified: Nyay Vihar in Bhitauli Khurd and Paper Mill Ward corridor from Nishatganj crossing to Barrel Number 10.
Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar confirmed the technical appraisal committee assessment and administrative approval are done.
Implementation will begin after NDMA grants final approval and releases funds.
The project aims to improve flood resilience through structural and technological interventions.
