Why in news
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) provided a detailed update on the Skill India Mission (SIM) in a July 2026 press release, covering training, placements, and new initiatives. The release highlights the launch of the Swavalambini program for women entrepreneurship and the impact assessment of PMKVY 4.0, showing significant employment gains.
Background
Launched in 2015, the Skill India Mission aims to train India's youth in industry-relevant skills. It operates through schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) via ITIs. PMKVY has had four versions (1.0 to 4.0), with 4.0 focusing on industry-aligned training and on-the-job training.
Key facts
Under PMKVY 1.0-3.0 (2015-16 to 2021-22), 56.89 lakh candidates were certified, with 24.3 lakh placed, achieving a placement rate of 42.8%.
PMKVY 4.0 emphasizes empowering trainees to choose diverse career paths through industry-relevant courses including on-the-job training (OJT).
The PM Vishwakarma scheme (launched Sep 2023) provides holistic support (skill upgradation, toolkit, collateral-free loans) to artisans in 18 traditional trades.
The Swavalambini program (launched Feb 2025) targets women entrepreneurship in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Uttar Pradesh, and Telangana; 1,200 women trained under EAP and 602 under EDP so far.
Skill India Digital Hub (SIDDH) is an integrated digital public infrastructure platform for course discovery, enrollment, and certification.
MSDE has signed MoUs with global tech leaders (IBM, Microsoft, Autodesk, AWS, Shell) for training in AI, robotics, drone tech, mechatronics, and IoT.
The Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) program provides structured foundational and practical AI skill development for students and teachers.
An independent impact evaluation of PMKVY 4.0 by AJNIFM (2025) showed that the combined share of employed and self-employed STT respondents rose from 26.6% (pre-training) to 45.4% (post-training), a gain of 18.8 percentage points.
MSDE also runs entrepreneurship awareness programs (EAP) and entrepreneurship development programs (EDP) through NIESBUD and IIE.
