NIELIT and SCL Mohali Partner to Offer Indigenous 1.2 µm PDK on eChipHub
UPSC / SSC current affairs note
Why in news
NIELIT and SCL Mohali have partnered to provide an indigenous 1.2 µm Process Design Kit (PDK) on the eChipHub platform. This collaboration strengthens India's semiconductor ecosystem and advances the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) by enabling students, researchers, and startups to access indigenous IC design and prototyping capabilities.
Background
eChipHub is a national platform for semiconductor design education and capacity building, implemented by NIELIT under a MeitY-funded EdTech project. SCL Mohali is a semiconductor laboratory under MeitY. The partnership builds on an MoU signed on 25 April 2025 between NIELIT and SCL to collaborate on semiconductor R&D, innovation, and skilling.
Key facts
NIELIT and SCL Mohali have partnered to offer an indigenous 1.2 µm Process Design Kit (PDK) on the eChipHub platform.
eChipHub is a comprehensive national platform for semiconductor design education and capacity building, implemented by NIELIT under a MeitY-funded project.
The PDK is integrated with open-source EDA toolchains, creating India's first indigenous 'design-to-fabrication' learning pathway.
The PDK will be available via Aadhaar-authenticated secure download to ensure responsible access.
The collaboration aims to train approximately 30,000 students in semiconductor design through courses, bootcamps, faculty development programs, internships, and industry-academia collaborations.
eChipHub features cloud-based virtual labs, workshops, hackathons, academic alliances, and collaborative chip design projects.
An MoU between NIELIT and SCL was signed on 25 April 2025 to promote semiconductor R&D, innovation, and skilling.
The initiative supports the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and aims to make India a global hub for semiconductor design and innovation.
